The Dishwasher Loading Debate: Are You Loading It Wrong?

Dishwashers might be one of the only household appliances people defend like sports teams.

Everybody has a system. Everybody thinks their system is correct. And somehow every family has at least one person who loads it in a way that starts arguments.

The truth? Modern dishwashers are better than most people think — but there are still a few loading habits that can make them clean worse.

Stop Pre-Rinsing Everything

This one surprises people.

Scraping off large food chunks? Good idea.

Turning every plate spotless before loading? Usually unnecessary.

Most modern dishwashers and detergents are designed to clean actual dirty dishes. If the dishes go in already clean, detergent doesn’t always work as effectively and you’re mostly just paying to wash dishes twice.

Don’t Block The Spray Arms

This is probably the biggest loading mistake we see.

Large pans, cutting boards, and giant mixing bowls can block water from reaching everything else.

If half your dishwasher comes out dirty, don’t blame the appliance immediately — check if something created a water force field in the middle.

Cups Face Down. Bowls Face Down-ish.

If cups face upward, congratulations — you’ve created a water collection system.

Most cups and bowls should angle downward so water can spray in and drain back out.

Don’t Nest Your Silverware

If every spoon is stacked together like a family reunion, they don’t clean well.

Mix spoons, forks, and knives so water can reach all surfaces.

(Also maybe point the sharp knives down unless you enjoy surprises.)

Don’t Overload It

Yes, technically one more plate fits.

No, that doesn’t mean it should.

Dishes need space for water to move around. Cramming everything in usually turns one load into two loads.

So… What’s The Correct Way?

If your dishes come out clean consistently, your system is probably fine.

But if you’re seeing cloudy glasses, food left behind, or mystery residue, try:

  • Scrape — don’t pre-rinse

  • Keep spray arms clear

  • Face cups downward

  • Separate silverware

  • Leave a little breathing room

If your dishwasher still isn’t cleaning well after changing your loading habits, there may be more going on than dish placement. Worn spray arms, clogged filters, low water temperature, or circulation issues can all affect cleaning performance. Miller’s Appliance Repair provides dishwasher repair and diagnostic service throughout Nashville and surrounding areas to help get your dishwasher back to doing what it was designed to do — ending household debates, not starting them.
